What is Obedience?

Obedience is a popular dog sport that’s continuing to grow across the country. It’s one of the oldest dog sports, developed in the 1930s. If you think your dog is a great listener and follows cues well, you may want to consider obedience competitions, known as obedience trials.

Different skills, like walking on and off leash, retrieving, jumping, or testing different skills like “stay,” obedience showcases the teamwork between dog and handler. Obedience trials show that your dog isn’t just well-behaved at home, but also in public places and around other dogs.

All dogs, regardless of breed or age, are invited to participate in obedience. Purebreds and mixed-breed dogs alike! Obedience is a great starting point for people and dogs who are new to dog sports who still want a challenge. Check out the winners of the 2023 AKC National Obedience Championship!
