Illinois House Resolution 602, sponsored by Representative Sara Wojcicki Jimenez, endorses the American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen Program and supports its efforts to promote responsible dog ownership. AKC encourages all Illinois residents to contact their state representatives and House Leadership to express support of HR 602.
Started in 1989, AKC’s Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs.
Many dog owners choose Canine Good Citizen training as the first step in training their dogs. AKC registration is not necessary for certifying a dog as an AKC Canine Good Citizen. However, the CGC program also lays the foundation for other AKC activities such as obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events. As owners work with their dogs to teach CGC skills, they discover the many benefits and joys of training their dog. Training enhances the bond between owner and dog. Dogs that have a solid obedience education are a joy to live with—they respond well to household routines, have good manners in the presence of people and other dogs, and fully enjoy the company of the owner who took the time to provide training, intellectual stimulation, and a high-quality life.

Illinois residents are strongly encouraged to contact your state representative and House Leadership members. Let them know that you support the AKC and its Canine Good Citizen Program, and encourage the committee members to approve House Resolution 602.
