Biographical Information

Wilbur E. “Red” Henry (1925-1990) was a breeder and trainer of Beagle hounds, based in Marysville, Pennsylvania. His well-regarded kennel Orion produced many rabbit hunting hounds.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of one binder of research material and folders of loose items, all relating to Henry’s interest in the breeding and training of hunting dogs, specifically Beagles. Included are original pedigrees, correspondence, notes, pamphlets, pictures, and ephemera assembled by Henry over the years.

The binder (1878-1975) includes early 20th-century ephemera, advertisements, field trial records, pedigrees, photographs, and correspondence related to prominent Beagles (Young Tippacanoe, Durron’s Barmaid Boy, Tips Tucker, Sally Red Sox, Contentnea Jackson, and descendents). Also present are later clippings and personal notes on dog care and breeding, research notes a timeline of breed development beginning with General Richard Rowett in the early 1870s, illustrations, bibliographies, correspondence with customer Philip Parratt concerning dogs purchased from Orion Kennel, and photographs from a 1975 rabbit hunt in Calabogie, Ontario, Canada undertaken by Henry, Paratt, and friends.

The folders (1921-1964) are comprised of clippings from The American Field, pamphlets on flea control and other dogcare topics, a 1958 Beagle stud book, and pedigree notes, including a detailed tree for Henry’s dog Valiant Parson written on the back of an architectural blueprint.

Several descriptive notes written by the donor Philip Paratt are interspersed within the materials.

The research files have been maintained in their original form and order.
